After the Fires - Rebirth, is part of my powerful After the Fires series, that beautifully captures the resilience of the Australian bush in the aftermath of devastation. In this piece I focus on the gentle but persistent regeneration already beginning, as seen in the “black boys” (grass trees) pushing through with hints of green. The charred black stumps speak to the intensity of the fires, yet they’re softened by the tender signs of life returning—a poignant reminder of nature’s capacity to heal.

The composition is rich with contrast and texture. Burnt orange and rust-toned leaves of the gum trees stand out brilliantly against a backdrop of dry brown dirt, pale sand, and rocky terrain that hints at the majestic Grampians beyond. I’ve used my signature mark-making to bring movement and emotion to the landscape, while the soft, clear blue sky frames the scene with a sense of calm and quiet optimism. Rebirth is not only visually striking but deeply moving—a testament to resilience, beauty, and hope in the wake of destruction.
